Why Polis Shouldn't Veto Climate Bill
Colorado friends, there’s a bill at our state capitol SB21-200 that would enforce the historic climate bill we passed in 2019. (The one that committed us to reducing GHG emissions in large chunks ultimately by 90% by 2050 compared to 2005 levels.)
🏔
Problem is, our state regulatory agencies aren’t enforcing these goals! Earlier this year, our Governor Jared Polis revealed a roadmap to reach these goals. Yet, his roadmap doesn't provide funding to ensure enforcement, nor a clear plan. So, some legislators have written this new bill, SB21-200, to get CO on track.
🏔
The issue now is that Gov Polis is threatening to veto the enforcement bill because he believes setting hard emission caps isn’t necessary and he is opposed to giving broad regulatory power to the Air Quality Control Commission.
🏔
Yet, we’ve already given the AQCC this power when passing the 2019 climate bill. So Polis’s veto threat seems to be that he’s opposed to enforceable climate regulations. His neoliberal bent is not a good look when it comes to the future of our Earth. Not to mention, he ran on a climate *policy* platform...

Let’s hold Polis accountable. Sign this letter to support the new bill.
And keep your eyes out for a rally in Boulder in the next week.
